Surround Sound Systems

Published in Acoustics

Even the most powerful system won’t sound good if the speakers are positioned incorrectly. Placement is key.

Basic principles for speaker placement

1. Front left, right, and center speakers

The center speaker should be positioned as close to the middle of the screen as possible.

The front speakers are usually placed so they form an angle of about 46° to 60° relative to the listener.

A narrower placement (around 46°) often delivers better results in small rooms because it reduces distortion and improves sound localization.

2. Height and aiming

The tweeters should be at ear level when seated.

If this isn’t possible, the speakers should be tilted so they “aim” directly at the listener.

3. Surround speakers

They should not be placed directly behind the listener.

The best results are achieved when they are slightly pulled to the sides, creating an enveloping sound field.

4. Subwoofer

There is no mandatory symmetrical placement.

You can experiment with the position until you find the spot that provides the most even bass response.

Home theater vs. cinema hall

In cinemas, the front speakers are often placed behind an acoustically transparent screen, allowing perfect alignment. At home, this is rarely possible, so a balance must be found between space, furniture, and optimal sound.

It’s important for the center of the screen to be at eye level or slightly below to avoid fatigue and ensure natural viewing.

Practical tips for better sound at home

  • ⮞   avoid placing the front speakers in the corners.

  • ⮞   leave at least 20–30 cm of space from the walls.

  • ⮞   experiment with small position adjustments — even 5–10 cm can make a noticeable difference.

  • ⮞   consider acoustic treatment — panels, bass traps, diffusers.

Your home theater deserves sound that truly immerses you. If you want to achieve a real cinematic experience, we’re here to make it happen.
